Chafee Survives Primary Leaders of the national Republican Party have the U.S. Senate candidate who they wanted in the general election in Rhode Island. Incumbent Senator Lincoln Chafee will take on former Rhode Island Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse. Chafee has survived the challenge of a more conservative republican, Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey.
