STOPPING VIOLENT CRIME
Violent crime is down in Providence. Police and
community activists attribute the decline partly
to new one on one efforts to discourage violence
by young people. WRNI’s Deborah Becker visited
some Providence neighborhoods this week to watch
the work of street-workers, employed by The
Institute For the Study and Practice of Nonviolence.
COMMUNITY POLICING
The Chief of Police in Providence attributes decreases in
crime to many factors. He praises the street workers of the
Institute For the Study and Practice of Nonviolence. He tells
Deborah Becker he also believes it’s proof that community
policing is working.
NEWPORT FOLK
Crosby, Stills, and Nash headline The Apple
& Eve Newport
Folk Festival this year. One major change
at the festival this year is behind the scenes.
The long time producer of the folk festival
is taking this year off because of illness.
His daughter has stepped in for her father.
She talks with Deborah Becker about the festival.
POLITICS
The Rhode Island Supreme Court is no reviewing the constitutionality of a
casino proposed for West Warwick. The decision could be of little
consequence, the court would issue only a non-binding advisory opinion.
Deborah Becker reviews that and other political news with Providence
Journal political writer Scott MacKay and University of Rhode Island
political scientist Maureen Moakley.
NEWPORT JAZZ
The
Newport Jazz Festival celebrates its 50th
anniversary this summer. Festival founder George
Wein recalls the early days of the festival
in a conversation with Deborah Becker. They’re
also joined by Dave Brubeck, who will perform
at the festival next week.
