Future of The Providence Public Library

staff members and reducing library hours at the central library downtown.
Criticism of the plan has been emotionally voiced by many library employees
and supporters on the web site Providence
Public Library Defense. We talk with Dale Thompson, director of the
Providence Public Library, and
Elizabeth Johnson, a former employee of the PPL and critic of the administration's
plan.
We also talk to American Library Association president Carol Brey-Casiano
about funding issues for libraries nationwide.

We talk with Dr. Melissa Gaitanis, about her research unit in Providence
that is part of the national HIV Vaccine Trial Network.
Political Roundtable
Host Mark Degon speaks with Maureen Moakley, chair of the political science
department at The University of Rhode Island and Scott MacKay, political
writer at The Providence Journal.
Bio-blitz
Every year volunteer with the Rhode
Island Natural History Survey search a small part of the state to
demonstrate the region's biodiversity by counting as many species as possible.
This year's survey set a bio-blitz record. We take a field trip with Bio-Blitz
organizer Rick Ensor.
New Music Festival in Providence
As the famous Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals are preparing their shows,
a new music festival is being launched in Arovidence. The City
of Providence Department of Art, Culture and Tourism and the Providence
Black Repertory Company are producing the festival which is designed
to bring a variety of musical styles to the capitol city, free of charge,
next weekend. WRNI's Jim Moses visited Black Reps' Exodus Cafe on Westminster
Street to listen to some music, and talk with artistic director Don King
