Statewide Teachers Contract
A preliminary state study says that Rhode Island might significantly reduce
education costs by implementing a single statewide contract for teachers.
However, debate continues over the need for local control of schools and
the quality of the study. We talk with Peder Schaefer, the coordinator
of the study for the Rhode
Island State Budget Office. We also hear from Representative Nicholas
Gorham (R-Coventry) who wants to see the issue advanced with additional
study, and Marcia Reback, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Chapter
of the American Federation of Teachers.
Parent Run School
In this installment of our on going series on unique approaches to education,
we visit the Parent Teacher Child Cooperative
School in Providence (PTC). The school requires the participation
of parents.
Political Roundtable
Host Deborah Becker speaks with Maureen Moakley, chair of the political
science department at The University of Rhode Island and Scott MacKay,
political writer at The Providence Journal.
History of the Providence Renaissance
Anew book examines the political history behind the transformation of
Providence since the 1970's. WRNI's Tom Kogut spoke with the authors of
Providence: the Renaissance City - Rhode Island College political scientists,
