Burst Pipe Prompts Closure at Department of Health Building

The state's Department of Health building is closed to the public today, as employees assess the damage of a water leak from over the weekend.

Health officials say sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning a frozen pipe on the building's roof burst and flooded the floors below.  Annemarie Beardsworth with the Department of Health says cleaners used drying machines overnight, so today the building doesn't look too bad.

"There's ceiling tiles missing," Beardsworth said. "It's not like there are puddles of water around.  Most everything is dried out at this point."

Beardsworth says it's still unclear why the pipes burst.  Phones at the Department of Health are working, but the computers are still down.  Officials expect to decide when the building will reopen by later today.
