Governor Carcieri will discuss his opposition to same-sex marriage tonight on the "The 700 Club," the Christian Broadcasting Network's flagship show. Carcieri's staff released notice of the appearance on his web site this afternoon.
The governor will appear on a special segment produced by the network's news show and will be about the "traditional/gay marriage debate."
The 700 Club is Rev. Pat Robertson's broadcast vehicle. The show often touches on politics, most famously after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. After the attacks, the late Rev. Jerry Falwell and Robertson appeared on the show to blame "feminists and gays and lesbians" for the attacks.
"God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve,'' said Falwell on the 700 Club after the attacks.
"Jerry, that's my feeling," said Robertson. Both Robertson and Falwell were rebuked by then-President George W. Bush for their remarks. "The president does not share those views," a Bush spokesman said at the time.
Rhode Island is the lone state in New England that does not legally recognize same-sex unions.
